Rather than using the typical “New Year’s Resolution” to support accomplishing goals, I instead look for a theme for the year to focus on.

Last year’s theme was “unshakable faith,” which – in effect – brought lots of faith-promoting experiences which led to a HUGE increase in faith in the Lord.  Wow.  What a year – intense + miraculous!  The year before was “intention,” leading me to be more intentional with my life.  This shifted SO much for my life in a BIG way.  My good friend, Kelly Anderson, was the one who inspired me to search out themes for each year.  She chooses a word, which I tried to do, but this year as I was pondering on what the theme should be, an entire scripture came to mind:

“… establish a house, even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God.” – Doctrine & Covenants 88:119

I realized that EVERYTHING I desire right now for myself and my family is mentioned in this scripture.  Mmm!  I love it!

You may be wondering: how do you know when you’ve found your theme for the year?  For me, I know I’ve found it when thinking about that word or phrase makes my heart sing.  When I think about this scripture, I get ALL fired up.  It gives me lots of energy and tons of ideas.  It doesn’t feel heavy or like a big “project” at all.  I want to post the words of my year’s theme on the walls in my home and maybe even order custom jewelry with the words etched in it.  THAT’s how I know I’ve found my theme.  (If you have more questions about how to find your theme, ask me in the comments and I’ll answer them there.)

Looking closer at my 2013 theme, I saw some really interesting things.  Here’s a snapshot view of some thoughts/desires I have about creating with this scripture theme:

House of Prayer:

  • Focus more on gratitude – daily gratitude journal for myself and with my kids during homeschool time
  • Unify our whole household in what to pray for as a family
  • Personal prayer in the AM/PM and as needed – prayer in my thoughts all throughout the day
  • Couple prayer with Randy daily
  • Family prayer
  • Supporting my kids’ prayers in the AM/PM and as needed
  • Meal prayers – seek understanding of why we do this more so it can be more intentional

House of Fasting:

  • Cleone Skousen describes “fasting” as any act of keeping appetites within bounds
  • Daily exercise
  • Budgeted spending – stick to cash envelopes
  • Sugar treats rare – saved for special occasions
  • Movie time for the kids only 1-2 times/week
  • 15-30 minute video game time/daily max. (look at having Tate earn this time)
  • Daily, focused homeschool time
  • Solid bed time routine
  • Everyone’s hair brushed and dressed every morning
  • LOTS of healthy snack and meal options

House of Faith:

  • Live a “liahona” lifestyle – seek the Lord’s direction + consecrate each day to Him
  • Regular Temple attendance (monthly as a couple)
  • Daily family scripture study
  • Daily, Spirit-led homeschool devotional
  • Continue seeking “unshakable faith”

House of Learning:

  • Morning personal study time for me daily
  • Daily, focused homeschool time
  • Regular outings/field trips
  • Book shelves hung for each of the kids to put their special/favorite books on in their rooms
  • Reading spots set up throughout the house (a long-time dream of mine to create)
  • Mandatory reading time for each of the kids each day to continue improving reading skills

House of Glory:

  • “Curtis’ are kind” – a phrase/motto we’re working on burning into our kids’ minds right now
  • A home where “angels delight to come”
  • Testimonies strengthened and shared
  • Love of God
  • Love of the Word of God
  • House of Joy
  • Seeking to live and fulfill our missions, encouraging and empowering our children to do the same

House of Order:

  • Daily chores
  • Daily playroom/bedroom pick-up
  • Weekly area to organize/create order in
  • Meals planned monthly
  • Goal: everything has a place
  • Kids more used to a strong schedule/routine
  • Organized work time – more effective, dependable and consistent

House of God:

  • Love of God
  • Love of Jesus Christ
  • The Spirit is a welcome guest in our home – we encourage and continually invite His presence
  • Firm in the faith
  • We know the Master we serve

As you can see, this theme opened up a LOT for me in seeing how most all of the “goals” I have are related to this scripture theme.  Just amazing.  I am SO excited to keep working on this and opening it up further.

I’ll be posting more about each of these areas and continued insights as I receive them.  What an exciting year!

What’s your theme/focus this year?  I would truly LOVE to hear about it in the comments below!

Ditch New Year’s Resolutions + Find a Theme Instead

This is so beautiful Quinn, truly touched to see the depth of your commitment to serve The Lord and your family by outlining each of these areas with such great care. I’m so inspired and excited to see what happens beyond this stage- what ideas do you have for creating systems to implement, how you and Randy will execute and how your kids will get on board, etc.

My immediate thought is to focus on one theme a month as primary focus so you don’t get overwhelmed and then add the others but that really won’t work because then you won’t be balanced so I guess the best thing is to ask The Lord for what to focus on each day and write down impressions. He will guide you. Then please share with all of us!

My word for 2013 is LOVE. As I connected with it I felt drawn to choose love, be love, create love, share love, speak love, radiate love… And then yesterday it defined itself further as I was seeking more inspiration and it evolved to Feed My Sheep. So I have a word & a theme! Grateful now to follow your example and break it down into each area of my life.

Thank you, Quinn. You are a dear soul sister and I love you so much. I love you for your inquenchable desire to always better yourself and be closer to The Lord and to be in alignment with Him in all you do.
